Athletics update

on

It has been a busy start to the Athletics season, but it has been fantastic to be back fully competing again after a two year break! We are looking forward to an equally busy second half term.

Reading and District Athletics League

At the start of the term, the Upper IV and Lower V competed in the Reading and District Athletics League where they finished an excellent 2nd overall – this was out of over 20 teams. There were some excellent performances, including Carys, who set a new school record in the 800m.

Reading Town Championships

In the Reading Town Championships held last week on Friday 20 May, the Lower IV and Upper IV competed superbly; coming 2nd overall. There were bronze medals for Izrella – 100m; Emily – 200m; Saffron – Javelin and silver medals for Grace – 1500m and Isabella – Shot. We also had some Reading Schools Champions crowned, as gold medals were awarded to Ruby – 300m; Isabella – 800m and Kara – High Jump.

ESSA Schools Track and Field Championships – Berkshire round

On Tuesday 17 May, Junior (Upper III and Lower IV) and Inter (Upper IV and Lower V) teams travelled to Bracknell to compete in the Berkshire round of the ESAA Schools Cup Track and Field Championships. The students performed excellently in their track and field events on a rather hot day, setting some excellent times and distances.

The points given for each performance were totalled at the end of the day and the Inter team came 3rd in the competition, and the Juniors 1st!. Out of the whole of Berkshire, this meant the Inters were 6th and Juniors 3rd.

Due to these excellent performances, the teams have been ranked 12th and 11th in the South West of England, meaning they have both qualified to represent The Abbey and Berkshire at the South West Regional B Finals, being held in Winchester in June.

Berkshire Track and Field Club Championships

Some of our students recently competed for their clubs in various events at the Berkshire Track and Field Championships. Riya, Matilda, Grace, Isabella, Amelia, Ruby and Carys competed, bringing home PB’s and medals. Particular mention should go to Carys in Lower V, who became County Champion in both the 800m and 1500m. She also set a new Championship best performance in the U17 800m.
