The Senior School Library celebrated World Book Day with a Harry Potter Quiz. There was an eager response from many muggles across the school who answered questions such as ‘What breed is Hagrid’s pet dragon?’ and ‘What do Hermione’s parents do for a living?’
Such was the high standard of the knowledge and enthusiasm for Harry Potter that we had four winners with 90%, 11 runners-up with 80% and four in third place with 70%. The winners will receive Harry Potter memorabilia as prizes.
Author Visit to Senior and Junior School
A highlight of the World Book Day celebrations was the visit of Jennifer Claesson, an Abbey alumna and now successful author. She enthralled her Upper II, Lower III and Upper III audience with her treasured memories of being an Abbey schoolgirl and with stories of her experiences as a writer.
The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A, and many of Upper III were eager to have copies of Jennifer’s books, The October Witches, and The November Witches which were autographed by the author herself.
Reading Your Way photos
This year the World Book Day charity called on ‘everyone to let go of pressure and expectations, giving children a choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading’. In light of this World Book Day celebration, we promoted reading ‘our way’ by displaying photographs of us doing just that – reading our way.
Staff and students captured themselves reading in a more traditional manner such as curling-up on a sofa with a beloved pet and, more unusually whilst engaging in football, ballet or even doing the splits! We also had a photoshopped category to allow for even more creative and unique ideas.
Book Sale
Another event to coincide with World Book Day has been the book sale in the library. All proceeds go to BookTrust which raises funds to support families with reading. Did you know one of every five children has never owned a book? BookTrust helps families through a range of initiatives including sending packs of books and offering a volunteer reading service.
The sale constitutes ex-library stock and will remain until the end of term, so if students have not visited the library with your pennies, you are still very much welcome. Books are between 50p to £2.
