Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium

on

Last week, Upper II went on an exciting trip to the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. We left bright and early and boarded the coach for the short journey to Winchester. There was a buzz of anticipation amongst the students – they could not wait to learn more about space and try out all the hands-on exhibits.

During the immersive planetarium show we reclined back in our seats and gazed up in wonder at the domed ceiling as it was transformed into a night sky filled with stars, planets and constellations. The presenter guided us through a virtual tour of the solar system, starting with the burning sun at the centre. The students learned about each of the planets – their order, size, composition and special features. Giant Jupiter with its swirling storms and colourful bands of gas fascinated them. One amazing fact was that all the other planets could fit inside Jupiter!

The workshop allowed the students to learn all about the significant design choices that need to be made when designing a space telescope and how certain materials are better at reflecting the heat of the sun.

They also enjoyed exploring the two hands-on learning zones, one specifically focused on space and the other covering a wide range of science topics. The students were able to discover how heavy objects would be on the different planets, step inside a space suit, play a 10 metre long, 3 metre high guitar and even more!

On the journey home, it was wonderful hearing the students excitedly chatting about the amazing things they learned that day. It was a fun, educational day that will not be forgotten.
