Theatre Trip

on

‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’ was a beautiful performance that managed to successfully blend more traditional aspects of theatre such as puppetry with very modern ones such as the use of cameras on stage and simultaneous projection.

The visual aesthetics of the production were also fascinating, with natural colours including brown and green dominating the stage, along with a distinct absence of colder and harsher tones. The acting style was also enjoyable with a lot of comedy which complemented the storytelling – like nature of the production. However, by far the most enchanting aspect of the production was the puppetry, with the whole auditorium falling silent when watching a skeletal wooden puppet of a child walk, shakily, across the stage, or at the end, when a flying winged structure (asking the question angel, human or bird?) was silhouetted against the back wall. Overall it was a beautifully orchestrated production with humorous acting and complicated moral themes.

On Tuesday I watched  “A very old man with enormous wings”. I must say when I first heard the name of the play I wasn’t entirely sure about what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised when I watched it. There were many things I loved about the play, mostly the unique techniques that were produced to make the wonderful play and also the feelings of not really knowing what to expect next.

Some of my favourite techniques used were when they used a camera to show and portray the puppets personalities . Another one of my favourite techniques was using feathers for a lot of the scenes in many different ways to portray the wings (spoiler alert!).

Overall I loved the play and I thought it was very interesting and fun, and would really recommend the play for family’s young and old.
