Abbey students met at St. Catherine’s, Bramley on Sunday morning for the National Girls’ Chess Chmapionships.

There was a record entry of 98 teams equating to 294 players. The Abbey entered 4 teams in total, two from the Senior School and two from the Junior school.

We took part in the U19 section which had 40 teams from all over the South of England and we had two teams of 3 players. We played three, one hour matches in the morning and both our teams won two of these; the A team beat Headington and South Hampstead A 3-0 and the B team beat Headington and Dunottar 2-1.

There were two more rounds of matches in the afternoon and the A team won both their matches, against Wycombe Abbey, 2-1, and against Holyport, 2.5 – 0.5.

Overall, The Abbey finished 3rd overall out of 40 teams, and after receiving medals it was announced that we have qualified for the National Finals, which will be held in April.

We were very happy and had a great day!

(Captain of the A team)
