Maths week

on

Last week, Senior School students were immersed in Maths Week when they faced a number of challenges including daily headscratchers, a puzzle of the week, poster puzzles, a challenge puzzle and ‘Mathematics Unleashed’ – an opportunity for students to talk about areas of maths they find inspiring.

The aim of Maths Week, across England, is to celebrate the wonder of Maths and raise the profile in a subject that’s widely under-loved. Yet the event permeated deeply into the minds of a large number of students at The Abbey, and was enjoyed by all.

Below, we celebrate the winners of the various aspects within Maths Week:

Puzzle of Week
Puzzle 1: Jasmina, Upper V

Puzzle 2: Hayley, Upper V

Puzzle 3: Yuqi, Upper III

‘3’ Challenge

Simra, Upper III

The highlight of the week however were the Maths talks in the Lecture Theatre during Friday lunchtime. This attracted a crowd of students and teachers, and due to its success we will definitely run it again next term.

Here is a list of the students who spoke and their topics:

Name(s)Topic
Izzy and Carys the brachistochrone curve
Aarini modelling cancer tumours using computational modelling.
Mehr and Jodie the fermat point
Dion, Mady and Catherine The number 0
Alisa Complex Numbers and Quantum Mechanics

These students ranged from U5 to U6 and were very well prepared and knowledgeable about their interesting topics. I certainly learnt a thing or two.
