Future Self Letters

on

At the end of January, Miss Kaura challenged Junior School students to consider writing a letter to their future selves.  During her assembly, Miss Kaura reflected on all that we had experienced together as a school during the previous year, including the Fun Run, Charity Afternoon and Celebration Afternoon.

2023 was a year of big events in the wider world as well with the Coronation of King Charles III and the Lionesses reaching the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. A lot can happen in a year; we learn and grow with each passing day and our outlook on the world changes.

What would you want to say to yourself in 12 months time
Upper IIP took on the challenge of writing letters to their future selves. Below are two of their insightful letters. Keep and eye out in the Gateway for more letters as they arrive in Miss Kaura’s inbox!

As I am writing this letter, I am thinking about what I would like to achieve this year.

I would like to improve on things that I find difficult. My aim is to improve my research skills as this will help me with unit of inquiry. I am gradually getting better at Maths and English by spending more time practising the different areas of each of the subjects.

There have been many changes during my time at The Abbey and every time I learn to adapt and develop. Currently I am learning my lines for Tiger Lily, I have started to realise the more I practise the easier the role becomes and the more confident I get.

I want to be a role model for my fellow students to be independent and more resilient as we get to the end of the year so that I am fully prepared for the final year of The Abbey Junior school.

As the year progresses I expect to be more mature and understand the importance of giving myself enough time to learn and develop gradually rather than doing everything last minute in a panic.

Outside of school I am practising my Golf and Tennis, I enjoy the lessons as I am consistently improving, by the end of the year I hope to be able to play outdoors on a Golf course and serve and rally in a tennis match.

My biggest learning this year so far is realising the more I enjoy something the better I get at it.

So please let me know when you read this letter how much you have enjoyed this year both inside and outside of education.

You’re the best

Zara

Dear future me,

By December 2024 I hope to have learnt more about outer space and planets. I also wish that I will receive a hundred house point certificate. I would like to have made more friends.

I want to stop always using my car and instead walk or ride my bicycle where possible for short journeys. I can help my town by planting more trees and plants. I can help my family by doing work around the house like making my bed and tidying my bedroom up.

I hope to be better at maths and English and I want to learn my 18 times table. I would like to learn how to survive in the wild just in case of an emergency. I hope to be more caring, knowledgeable and balanced.

I hope to be a better person in the future and I want to be able to help others if they need it.

Next year I want to read more books and learn new vocabulary that I can use in my everyday life.

Lots of love,

Tara
