The Bebras Results are in!

Over the last couple of weeks over 500 Abbey students across both the Junior and Senior School took part in the international computational thinking competition that is the Bebras Challenge. 408,339 students across the UK took part in this year’s competition, designed to be fun and to help inspire students to learn algorithmic and computational thinking skills desperately needed in the industry and over 4 million students worldwide.

Every student who took part in the competition will receive a certificate. However, those who scored in the top 10% of the country will receive a coveted Gold Certificate and be eligible to go on to take part in the Oxford University Computing Challenge in January.

Nine Lower III students gained a gold certificate (students in the years below are not judged against other students across the country) as well as 61 students in the Senior School. This is an increase in the number of gold certificates awarded to students at the School, both in the Junior and Senior School.

Sarah Tullis, Senior Deputy Head of the Senior School, gave her thoughts in response to our students’ amazing achievements:
“We are delighted by our students’ huge uptake of and success in this year’s Bebras Challenge competition. It is wonderful that we have so many excellent computational thinkers at The Abbey and that the Computer Science Department is nurturing and developing these skills which will carry students so far. We wish lots of luck to those who will go on to the Oxford University Computing Challenge.”

Robert Bradley, Head of Computer Science at the Senior School added:

“This year’s challenges were harder than last year’s and the scores nationally were significantly lower. It is testament to the hard work of our students that they managed to improve upon last year’s performance and gain so many gold Certificates.”

Sam Clark, Assistant Head of the Junior School also commented “This recognition is a testament to the importance we attach to Computing at the Junior School, which starts with the youngest members of our school community in Nursery!  We are delighted to celebrate the participation and success of these students and will be following their progress through to the next stage with pride.”

Students going on to the Oxford University Computing Challenge will be given more information and practice material in the coming weeks.
