Upper Prep Science Microhabitats

on

On Monday, Upper Prep took their Science learning outside and set out to investigate the different microhabitats around the school.

As part of our Science topic this term ‘Living things and their habitats’, Upper Prep wanted to see how many microhabitats they could find and different living organisms within these areas.

It was amazing to see so many microhabitats thriving in the Abbey Gardens Playground, from a small pond to our new flower beds, many small insects and plants were found. Mrs Hurley even found a Ladybird on the window sill in Abbey Gardens and the students enjoyed placing it back in its natural habitat.

To make looking at the living things easier, the children used hand held microscopes to see up close details in their microhabitats. The microscopes were excellent tools in examining tiny creatures and looking at the veins in the leaves outside. Upper Prep will be continuing with their exploration of living things and continuing to consider how to help the habitats around them.
