Upper III Physics Waves

on

This week in Physics we made a wave with sticks, jelly babies and masking tape.

A wave is a vibration that transfers energy. We learnt about the wavelength, trough, amplitude and frequency (which is measured in Hertz). We also learnt about longitudinal and transverse waves and compression and rarefaction.

When making the wave, we used a stand and clamp, and put masking tape across like a tightrope. Then we took jelly babies and stuck them on the end of the skewers, and everyone stuck them across the ‘tightrope’. We pushed the skewer that was on the end, and saw the transverse wave go down the masking tape like dominoes.

We were all so amazed by this lesson and surprised how fun it was and how much we could get out of our seats and use slinkies, and have LOTS of fun!
