Upper I were full of awe and wonder as they experienced Gaia, the world famous 3D Earth artwork, created from NASA imagery, by UK artist Luke Jerram. Suspended from the ceiling, the 3D model is seven metres in diameter, 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth.
When considering how the artwork made them feel and what it made them think about, some responses from Upper I students were:
‘I am amazed at how big it is, and how small I am!’
I feel relaxed because the music is calming and it makes me forget sad things’
‘It makes me realise that we need to protect the earth, not destroy it’
‘I wonder what the earth will be like in the future; will it have changed?’
‘The Earth is a beautiful sight from space. I now know what astronauts can see’
Following the exhibition the pupils participated in a workshop in the museum, considering why we should look after Planet Earth and ways in which we can protect it. They made personal pledges for a small thing that they can do to make a big difference!
