U16 Abbey Hockey – South Central Regional champions

on

The Abbey U16 Hockey team won their County Championships in October to qualify for the South Central Regional championship and compete against qualifiers from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

In the morning session the team remained unbeaten to win their pool and qualify for the semi-finals, winning the final game against Aylesbury High, with a goal from Grace.

In the semi-final they played Beaconsfield High in a close fought encounter.  Although dominating possession and winning several short corners, they were unable to score a goal until Lily R made the breakthrough in the final minutes of the game.  But, having secured the lead they then had to defend resolutely to protect it, including defending a last-minute penalty corner.

The final was against Embley School, from Hampshire, with whom the girls had contested a tight goalless draw earlier in the day.  That was not to be the case this time, from the first minute The Abbey dominated possession and created chances, hitting the post before securing the lead with a goal from Lily R (again) shortly before half time. Further goals from Hannah and Bela capped a dominant display by The Abbey team, who came out as 3-0 victors.

The team now progress to the England Hockey National Finals in February, where they will
face teams from the other seven hockey regions.
