There is nothing as exciting as helping children discover something new. At the beginning of August, I ran some Micro:bit workshops at Didcot Library for children between six and eleven. The aim was to code the Micro:bits to become pedometers. The talented children had few difficulties and they were excited to race to 100 steps using their finished products. All the children were asking at the end of the session where they could buy one!
The workshops were sponsored by The Abbey, allowing our Micro:bits to be used by the library, and we are currently using them with our UIV groups in computational thinking.
Micro:bits are a brilliant STEM gift because they are an affordable way to make physical computing easy and engaging. Primary schools can currently claim 30 Micro:bits for their classrooms for free, so if you have children at other schools (The Abbey has already applied!), make sure to bug your teachers about this amazing offer!
Mr Baker became a Micro:bit champion earlier this year ( bit.ly/3RJmiYz ) and he is excited about running more workshops at schools in and around Reading.
