Memorial Service to Miss Sheila Hardcastle MBE, Headmistress of The Abbey (1960 – 1991)

A memorial service for former Headmistress, Miss Sheila Hardcastle MBE, took place at The Abbey on Saturday, in the hall that bears her name.

Alumnae, Governors, current and former staff gathered in tribute to the former Head, who led the school for 31 years, between 1960 and 1991. The Hardcastle Hall was filled with music, readings, memories and prayers from those whose lives she had enriched by her progressive approach to the education of girls..

Chair of Governors and alumna, Elizabeth Harrison, led the tributes saying “Miss Hardcastle, a scientist herself, believed there was no subject that should be off limits for Abbey girls”.

Chaplain and Deputy Head Ethos & Pastoral, Allison Hadwin, invited the congregation to offer their impromptu stories. Many did, filling the Hardcastle Hall with memories of school days from the era, received with smiles, appreciation and sometimes laughter.

In 2023, we build on her achievements and her legacy, and we do so with enormous gratitude.
