Maths Curiosity for Lower III

on

Part of the curiosity project for Lower III, Senior School maths teachers Mr Li and Mrs Mallet hosted sessions to learn how to use the amazing abacus. Using an abacus helps with the basic calculations like addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division, it also helps in effective counting of decimal points, negative numbers.

The abacus is an ancient technology with modern relevance, it predates the making of glass and the invention of the alphabet, already used by the Romans, the greeks. Researchers from Harvard to China have studied the device, showing that abacus students often learn more than students who use more modern approaches.

Students had a lot of fun, some even said they preferred to use the abacus to the calculator. What a great new skill to have learnt!
