Lower Prep Unit of Inquiry

on

As part of our unit of inquiry ‘Where we are in Place and Time’, Lower Prep went on a walk around Reading looking at our built environment and how it has changed over time.

We began at Reading Rowing Club, walking along the River Thames, (feeding a swan or two and maybe the odd pigeon along the way!) under Caversham bridge and towards the Thames Lido, where buses met us and took us to Forbury Gardens. At Forbury Gardens we looked at the Maiwand Lion war memorial and wandered through the Abbey ruins before taking in the Reading Abbey Gateway, discussing its place in the history of our school.

The children pointed out buildings they thought might be ‘old’ and those they thought were ‘new’ and answered questions about how they came to those conclusions. The PYP concept of ‘Change’ was discussed in relation to the buildings we saw; specifically ‘what has changed?’, ‘why has it changed?’ and more thought provokingly ‘should it have changed?’
