Lower Prep’s current Inquiry theme is ‘We understand how a place changes over time by exploring the built environment’.
This week, our Inquiry took us to the Junior School, where we looked at the front of the Kensington building to identify the parts that were added to the front of our school site a few years ago.
The children remarked that the bricks looked new and noticed that the windows were quite large and plain, deciding that the front Reception area was newly constructed. We also spotted the original chimney on an old part of the roof.
After that, we proceeded to Miss Kaura’s office and noticed lots of features that gave clues that it was part of the original building, from the Victorian stained glass window on the inside of the old school front door, to the beautiful carved marble fireplace with bronze castings.
Finally, we walked back towards the new Reception area, noticing that the old part of the corridor had a tiled mosaic floor and large carved skirting boards, in contrast to the newer parts of the walkway. The children spotted so many details on our short tour and it was brilliant to hear their ideas about the different characteristics of the building and how it has changed through the years.
