British Road Signs – 1965

Margaret Vivienne Calvert

The series of road signs designed by Margaret Vivienne Calvert helps drivers navigate Britain everyday, yet we do not think about them and their design. They are a unique, and instantly recognisable design, which is easy to recognize from a distance; in this way they are fit for purpose, and represent a way that art and visual design can be used to serve an important purpose of navigation.

Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir’s road sign system, was launched and used on all British roads in January 1965, these new signposts aimed to improve typography on all English roads and railways. The designs aim to help drivers read easily at speed.

“Margaret Calvert road signs are recognizable all across the UK”
