European Day of Languages 2023

on

This year, Languages Day was the opportunity to celebrate the role languages play in global citizenship as well as the diversity of the Abbey community.

The day started with an inspiring Junior assembly where Languages Ambassadors Emilia, Scarlett, Annabel and Sophia gave an impressive account of where the study of languages has taken them and shared their own experience of being citizens of the world.

It was a real pleasure to welcome alumna Anabelle as a guest speaker in the Senior assembly. Anabelle, who currently studies French and Spanish at Trinity College Oxford, spoke eloquently of the various benefits of learning languages: embracing and enjoying other cultures, meeting new people from diverse backgrounds and travelling extensively, to name but a few. Anabelle described her incredible private tour of the United Nations building in New York given by no other than an Abbey alumna who works there as an interpreter!

Later in the day, students had fun discovering tongue twisters in different languages, lyrics of foreign songs with Lyrics Training, and competing in a quiz about idiomatic expressions.

There were some lovely contributions to the Lower IV file decoration competition and to the bunting in the Languages corridor greeting our visitors in different languages. The making of lanterns to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival was another highlight of the day.

Altogether, a very happy occasion!
