World Book Day at The Abbey: A Celebration of Stories and Imagination

on

Today The Abbey was alive with literary magic, as students and staff celebrated World Book Day in true Abbey style – with flair, creativity, and a love of reading at the heart of it all. The corridors were filled with characters leaping from the pages of beloved books, as students arrived dressed in vibrant costumes inspired by their favourite stories. From classic heroines to modern-day adventurers, the effort and imagination behind each outfit reflected our school’s passion for literature.

As part of the celebrations, students have received their World Book Day tokens, allowing them to exchange their voucher for a special £1 book, ensuring that every child has access to a new and exciting story. Encouraging a love of reading and making books more accessible is at the heart of World Book Day, and we are delighted to see our students embracing the joy of storytelling.

Alongside the fun and costumes, The Abbey is also using this day to make a difference. A Readathon has been sent home, giving students the opportunity to raise money for charity through the simple yet powerful act of reading. By taking part, they are not only developing their own literacy skills but also supporting a worthy cause – proving that books have the power to change lives in more ways than one.

Reading is a gateway to new worlds, a tool for lifelong learning, and a means to develop empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. Whether through the pages of a favourite novel, a gripping adventure, or an inspiring biography, books have the ability to transport us, challenge us, and ignite our imaginations. Today’s celebration is a reminder of just how important reading is, and we hope that World Book Day inspires our students to continue exploring the endless stories waiting to be discovered.

The Abbey Junior School Patron of Reading, Jennifer Claessen, has lent her support to the Read for Good Readathon and World Book Day by issuing a special newsletter for the Junior School students. This is part of her message to students:

“EVERYONE CAN BE A READER. The wonderful Readathon this March

enables you to raise money for a great cause and try out lots and LOTS of books! There is no such thing as a bad book, especially this month – see how many different kinds you can try! Challenge yourself to finish a series perhaps or try a book of each genre (if you usually like mystery, try a sci-fi book etc!)

What a wonderful opportunity! I’m so excited to see how your Readathon goes – GOOD LUCK READERS!
