The Music department at the Senior School have enjoyed listening to all the news of recent successes at the Woodley Festival. We have a number of students that have participated including Kayla who has written a short reflection on her experience below:
My name is Kayla and this was my first time taking part in the Woodley Festival – it was totally unforgettable! I was playing the piano, and played a piece called Sonata No.7 in C by Mozart. I thought it was gonna be nervous, but I wasn’t as the crowd was so supportive and it actually felt really exciting and fun. As I kept playing, I felt more confident and realised how fun performing can be. If I get another opportunity to take part in Woodley festival I would definitely go again! (Kayla, Upper IV)
I am also delighted to share that another two Abbey Upper IV students were successful at the recent Woodley Festival in the Grade 7 Piano class – Jo was awarded Gold and Livia Silver!
Well done to all students who participated in the Woodley Festival.
Here are some words from our students about this year’s Woodley Festival!
Taking part in the annual Woodley festival of Music and Arts has always been a highlight in March, even more so this year when we discovered that we were taking part in the same class together.
We participated in the Grade 7 piano solo class where we each played one of our exam pieces and were awarded both gold and silver medals. We were very pleased with our performances and achievements, having each other’s support made the experience a lot more memorable.

My name is Manxi and I’m in LIV or year 8. This past weekend, I had such an exciting time at the music competition! It was challenging but so rewarding, and I’m really proud of how everything went.
The highlight for me was the piano duet, where I won 1st place overall and took home the top trophy. Playing with my duet partner and getting that recognition was an amazing feeling. In addition, I placed 3rd in violin Grade 8 solo and 3rd in piano Grade 6 solo, which was really encouraging and made all the practice feel worthwhile.
I also performed in a violin duet, and we earned 2nd place. It was so much fun working together and finding the right balance and harmony for the piece.
Overall, the weekends were full of music, excitement, and unforgettable moments. I would really recommend this festival for anyone who would like to perform for any instrument or speech and drama. It really is a big achievement even if you don’t win, just give it a go. I’m so glad I got to take part and can’t wait for next year’s competition!

Anayra sang in the Traditional and Folk category for Under-11s at the Woodley Music Festival. She performed an Irish folk song and was delighted to be awarded the Silver Medal at the event.
Anayra worked hard to prepare for the performance. The adjudicator appreciated her clear diction and the way she brought the song to life by sharing the story through her words and expressions.
She was happy to have participated and was proud to receive such positive feedback from the adjudicator and the vocal committee. It was a wonderful experience that further encouraged her passion for singing.
