Saturday 1 March saw our intrepid Slovenia Expedition teams head out for a Training Day. This day was to help everyone prepare for their expedition in Slovenia in the summer.

The Slovenia Expedition runs differently to most other school trips and is a brilliant adventure. One of the differences is that the students take on more responsibility and organisational roles. Our first taste of this was organising lunch for Saturday. Catering for a team of 16 is not straightforward.

A shopping list was written and a team was dispatched to a local supermarket on Friday, with instructions to count slices of bread, slices of cheese and biscuits! The students did amazingly well at this and lunch on Saturday was a success, which bodes well for our big trip in the summer.

On Saturday we also discussed a number of issues that can be significant on an adventurous expedition such as, how we work as a team, what kit we will need, what to do if someone gets ill, how are we going to all get along, health and hygiene, first aid, food and sleeping arrangements and we had a talk through our fantastic itinerary. We also completed a 14km walk which helped us to understand where our fitness levels are.

Saturday also provided us with a birthday to celebrate and a boot lost in the mud – hopefully Slovenia won’t be as muddy in July!! Well done to everyone involved!
