Upper I to Windsor Castle

on

On Monday 17 November, Upper I enjoyed a wonderful and enriching visit to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and an inspiring setting for our history learning. The girls were excited from the moment we arrived, and the day was filled with curiosity, discovery, and plenty of memorable moments.

We began our visit by exploring the State Apartments, where the pupils were fascinated by the grandeur of the Waterloo Chamber, the intricate carvings of the Grand Reception Room, and the beautiful artworks and portraits that line the historic corridors. The girls were particularly intrigued by the ornate ceilings, glittering chandeliers, and the stories behind the many monarchs whose lives have shaped the castle over the centuries.

A highlight was seeing Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, a miniature masterpiece complete with running water, electricity, and thousands of tiny, perfectly crafted objects. The children were captivated by the incredible detail and craftsmanship.

Upper I then took part in a special workshop focusing on King Charles III and his role as monarch. Through interactive activities, the girls learnt all about his royal duties, from meeting world leaders and supporting charities to representing the United Kingdom on the international stage. When we finished our session, we were thrilled to notice the flag above the castle had changed — a clear sign that King Charles III had arrived at Windsor Castle during our visit!

In the afternoon, we visited the peaceful and historic St George’s Chapel. Here, the pupils paid their respects at the resting place of Queen Elizabeth II, reflecting thoughtfully on her remarkable life of service.

It was a truly lovely day — full of learning, awe, and a deeper appreciation of the rich history of the British monarchy. The students represented The Abbey beautifully and returned to school with plenty of stories and new knowledge to share.
