“The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers.” — Roy Ayers

Last week, our very own messengers of music sparkled brightly through their many and varied performances and workshops.

At the beginning of our Celebration of Music Week, we were delighted to welcome Jessica Lee Morgan, Abbey alumna, to deliver an introductory workshop on the Alexander Technique for our Lower V and Sixth Form music students. There was a specific focus on Performance Anxiety and the students were invited to experiment with various exercises to explore the connection between their psychological state and the physical effects that this has on the body. Students commented that they would try to be more aware of their posture going forward, as they understood the important part this can play in relieving some tension that forms part of the symptoms of Performance Anxiety. Huge thanks must be extended to Jessica for helping the students understand an integral part of performing.

Tuesday’s focus was ensembles; from duos and trios to the Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra, music ran out across the Hardcastle Hall and beyond.

On Wednesday we welcomed Jay who ran a series of Bhangra drumming workshops which were enjoyed by Upper III and Lower V musicians. Everyone had an opportunity to play the dhol, the double-sided barrel drum traditionally used in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan.

Thursday’s focus was twofold. At lunchtime two of our Rock bands performed to an enthusiastic crowd of students and staff in the Richards Hall. Our final public concert of this academic year, the Summer Celebration Teatime concert then took place in the Hardcastle Hall with fabulous performances from the Tre Voci, cello, wind, clarinet and saxophone ensembles as well as the Lower School String Quartet and the Senior Singers. The music soared as did the spirits of everyone listening and performing, truly connecting everyone present.
