Celebrating The Abbey Earth Day: A Day of Environmental Action
On Friday, 21st March 2025, The Abbey Senior School held its very first Abbey Earth Day, organised by the school’s Eco Council. The day was packed with engaging activities designed to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage sustainable habits among students and staff.
The day began with a special assembly focusing on Earth Hour and the small but meaningful actions we can all take to protect our planet. The Eco Council also launched an Energy-Saving Poster Competition, inviting students to design posters reminding everyone to switch off lights when leaving a room. The winning designs will be displayed around the school to promote energy conservation.

At break and lunchtime, students enjoyed a selection of delicious baked goods sold to raise money for Reading Climate Action Network. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, an impressive £72.15 was raised for this important cause.

Meanwhile, the Abbey Craft Club showcased how to upcycle materials by demonstrating how to make bug hotels and jewellery from recycled items. This creative session highlighted how everyday objects can be reused in fun and eco-friendly ways.

For those who wanted to get outside, there was an opportunity to help plant vegetables in the school veggie patch. These homegrown veggies will eventually be used in the school kitchen.

Between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm, the school participated in its own Earth Hour, switching off lights for 60 minutes. This symbolic act encouraged students to reflect on their environmental impact and think about how they can contribute to a greener future.
A big thank you goes to all the Eco Reps who helped organise this fantastic event. The day was not only educational but also a great reminder that small actions can make a big difference.
