The Circuit: Netiquette

on

I recently came across an interesting article that explored current online etiquette trends, and I thought the term “Netiquette”  perfectly captures the essence of respectful online behaviour.

In todays digital age, the internet plays a vital role in our lives – from learning and communication to entertainment and social interaction. I remember the days of dial up internet and being kicked off because someone wanted to use the phone. These days when your internet goes out theres a mild panic. Thank you for mobile data!

We spend so much of our day using the internet in one form of another, it is important to remember that the way we conduct ourselves online can have a significant impact of our personal and professional lives, and the lives of others. I wanted you give you all some guidance on netiqutte, online manners and the importance of being positive whilst online.

Netiquette, a blend of “internet” and “etiquette,” refers to the code of conduct for acceptable behavior in online interactions. Just as there are unwritten rules in face-to-face interactions, there are guidelines for communicating online that are respectful and productive.

Respect and Kindness: Treat others with the same respect and kindness online as you would in person. Avoid rude, inflammatory, or offensive comments.

Think Before You Post: Consider the potential impact of your words and actions. Once something is posted online, it can be difficult to remove completely.

Keep it Professional: When communicating in a professional or educational context, maintain a professional tone. Avoid using slang, excessive emojis, or informal language.

Respect Privacy: Do not share someone else’s personal information or images without their permission.

Be Clear and Concise: Online communication can easily be misinterpreted. Aim for clarity and brevity in your messages to avoid misunderstandings.

Be responsible for your content: If you share something online, be accountable for it. Following on form our article a few weeks ago, look out for and avoid spreading misinformation or unverified sources.

AVOID EXCESSIVE CAPITALISATION: USING ALL CAPS ONLINE IS OFTEN CONSIDERED SHOUTING AND MAY COME ACROSS AS AGGRESSIVE OR RUDE!!!

Your digital footprint is the trail of data you leave behind when using the internet. This includes social media posts, emails, online comments, and any other digital interactions. A positive digital footprint can enhance your reputation, while a negative one can have long-lasting consequences.

Think Long-Term: Consider how your online activities will be perceived in the future. Prospective employers and educational institutions often review applicants’ online presence.

Engage Positively: Participate in online discussions and communities in a positive and constructive manner.

Adjust Privacy Settings: Use the privacy settings on social media platforms to control who can see your posts and personal information.

Practicing good netiquette and prioritising online safety are essential skills that we should all have. By being respectful and encouraging a positive enviroment, we can all contribute to a safe and productive digital community. Whether you’re a student, parent, or staff member, understanding these principles and putting them into practice will benefit everyone in our school community.
