Thursday 12 May saw the final large ensembles concert of this academic year and what a concert it was!
Keyi, (Upper VI Music student and holder of the major music award) dazzled the audience with her performance of the first movement of Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major, expertly accompanied by the Abbey Symphony Orchestra. Keyi played with a relaxed elegance and obvious enthusiasm and joy.
The combined forces of the Clarinet and Wind ensembles gave an exciting performance of In the Hall of the Mountain King which was followed by an uplifting rendition of As you Sing by the Fourth Form Choir. The Concert Band were in fine form, playing selections from The Lion King and a medley of the hit songs of ABBA. The String Orchestra delighted the audience with two movements from Peter Martin’s Serenade for Strings which was followed by a fantastic performance of Just the two of Us by the Rock Band.
The Upper III vocal ensemble gave a melodious performance of Wonderful Life and the ethereal sounds of the Harp Ensemble delighted a packed Richards Hall. Sparks flew between sisters Mia and Ella in their snare drum duet, Three Camps, and Tara and Elena gave a superlative rendition of Handel’s Passacaglia. The concert concluded with a spectacular performance of Chicago – a medley by the outstandingly professional Symphony Orchestra.
