Steel Pan Workshop

on

Kensington Hall at the Junior School was filled with the sounds of the Caribbean on Tuesday when the Lower III students had a Steel Pan Workshop. Let’s hear what they had to say about it.

I really enjoyed the experience and we’re truly lucky to get a chance to do these things, everybody was really energetic which made the experience even better.

Before I even entered the room that the workshop was in I was very, very excited because last year we did another fun workshop similar to steel pans but brazilian Samba. I was not expecting them to be quite so big! I was expecting a little drum for us to bang on but instead I saw a quite large drum that had a curved inside and sections with A, B, D and other notes written on them.

it was just genuinely fun and a new experience for me

Steel Pans are made of oil cans imported from countries around Trinidad and Tobago. The oil cans they did not need were dumped on the island. One day they heard the rain clattering on the oil cans, and they turned them into musical instruments. They now play loud flamboyant music in festivals and carnivals.
