You might recognise this title as a quote attributed to Sir Isaac Newton. We wrote a letter to Robert Hooke in 1675
and made this famous statement: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants”. This
statement encapsulates Newton’s humility and acknowledgment that his ground-breaking discoveries and scientific
achievements were built upon the foundational work and contributions of the great thinkers and scholars who came
before him.
The Maths department have had much to celebrate recently, and the UKMT Junior Maths challenge is a perfect
example of high level achievement. All of Upper III and Lower IV sat the paper and the results revealed a record amount of
Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates. 97 in total with 15 reaching Gold. Of the Gold, 9 will go through to the Kangaroo
paper (11 June) which is the highest accolade for the Junior Maths Challenge. Congratulations to Samaira Agnihotri
in Upper III and Matilda le Fleming in Lower IV for the best results in each year.
@theabbeyschoolmaths Instagram account has released several posts promoting thoughtful Mathematical concepts,
celebrating results and wishing luck to the IB, Upper V and Upper VI students as they embark on their end of course exams.
MondayMorningMaths has continued the theme of topology, more recently explaining how to play noughts and
crosses in 4 Dimensions. Check it out, you wont play it the way you used to ever again! Also worth checking out is
MathsWithMartin on Youtube. Plenty of content and work throughs on the A Level and Further Maths content.
Café Maths will be back again on the 7 June, and there are time slots available if you’d like to speak about the
Maths that inspires you. Finally, there have been some books added to the library that should interest you if you’d
like to read about Mathematics. If there are others that you think should be added, we would love to hear about
them.
