Jonathan is a flautist, teacher, composer and early music specialist and has been based in Oxfordshire since 2018 after completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Yale School of Music and Juilliard School in New York.
Some of Jonathan’s most enjoyable musical experiences have included performing at the BBC Proms, touring India with a new commission by Reena Esmail and playing with baroque ensembles Les Arts Florissants, The English Concert and La Nuova Musica. A recent recording he made as part of the Boston Early Music Festival Ensemble has been nominated in this year’s GRAMMY awards.
His career has also taken him to more unusual places: miming in Elton John’s garden, playing 90s disco hits with Symphonic Ibiza and accidentally photobombing the Wikipedia photo of American actress Clea DuVall.
As a composer, Jonathan has had two works published to critical acclaim. His most recent composition is a sonata for flute and piano, premiered in the UK by his former teacher Michael Cox and recorded in full by London Symphony Orchestra principals Gareth Davies and John Alley. Which you can watch here.
Jonathan has been teaching at the Abbey since January 2025 and feels very lucky to be part of such a warm and welcoming community. He has just taken over as interim Head of Instrumental Studies.
