Sports Scholars Update

on

The Sport Scholars have had a busy and successful year, fully embracing the wide range of opportunities available to them. Through a combination of physical development, education, and experiences beyond their usual sporting environments, they have continued to grow both as athletes and as individuals.

A key part of their development has been the weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions, which have focused on improving the components of fitness most relevant to their individual sports. Alongside this physical training, scholars have developed a greater understanding of the importance of effective warm-ups, cool-downs, recovery, and injury prevention, giving them the knowledge and tools to perform at their best.

Building on this foundation of physical development, a visit to Pinewood Judo Club provided the scholars with an opportunity to challenge themselves in a completely different sporting environment. Karen Castle, a Sydney Olympic bronze medallist and European silver medallist, encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones while highlighting the importance of balance, coordination, and body awareness. She also demonstrated how skills such as decision-making, forward planning, and the ability to react quickly under pressure are essential, not only in judo but across a wide range of sporting contexts.

Alongside developing their physical and tactical skills, the scholars have also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of looking after their bodies away from training and competition. A session delivered by Sasha Gibbs, a nutritionist working with our caterers, Holroyd Howe, provided valuable insight into nutrition and hydration, helping students understand how to fuel effectively before and after exercise. The smoothie-making bike was an instant hit, with students enthusiastically pedalling as fast as they could to create their own nutritional drinks while putting their learning into practice.

As the scholars continue to develop as athletes, it has also been important to strengthen their identity and presence within the school community. The introduction of Sport Scholar T-shirts has helped raise the profile of the programme, making scholars easily recognisable during open events and school occasions. The T-shirts have helped foster a sense of pride and belonging, reinforcing their role as ambassadors for sport within the school.

It was also fantastic to see the scholars recognised for their sporting achievements at our annual Sports Dinner (Senior School) and Sports Awards (Lower School) events, where they proudly received their Sports Colours in recognition of their commitment, dedication, and success throughout the year.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September, including our new Upper III scholars, ready for another exciting year of sporting opportunities. For those continuing to represent their countries, regions, clubs, teams, or squads over the summer, as well as those trialling or continuing their training, we wish you the very best of luck. Please keep us updated on your achievements and share photos of your sporting journeys along the way.

The Sport Scholars programme continues to grow and develop, and we look forward to introducing new opportunities and experiences in the year ahead.
