Speak Up!

on

On Wednesday 8 February our senior public speaking team competed in the second round of the ESU public speaking competition which was hosted by The Abbey.

Grace had refined her speech – ‘Fiction can teach us more than fact’ – from the first round, delivering it passionately and persuasively. She handled the questions from another school’s questioner and the audience confidently and with style! Aarini and Izzie hosted another school: Aarini – as Chair – introduced the speaker, directed questions and summarised the speech confidently with a dash of humour. Izzie’s questions were wide-ranging and probing, leaving the audience with plenty to think about.

A highlight for me – and for all the teachers and students – was being able to run the event ‘live’ instead of via a Zoom meeting! It was wonderful that our students’ parents could watch their amazing performances and I am sure, like me, they are very proud of their daughters.

In their feedback, the three judges from the ESU said that all the presentations in the heat were of a very high standard. Only one school could go through to the Regional Final and although we did not win, I hope the experience of taking part in the competition for the first time will encourage our senior team to continue with public speaking and debating as they move into the sixth form.
