Reading MP visits The Abbey

on

It was a pleasure to host Reading MP, Matt Rodda, at The Abbey last Friday.

Matt came to meet our students and staff, learn more about our school, and kindly shared an insight into the role of being a Member of Parliament.

The Reading East MP began his visit with a tour from our Head Girls, Leah and Emily, before joining a group of pupils from across all Senior School year groups in the Chapel.

Matt shared what holding the position of Member of Parliament entails, before strongly encouraging students to “Have a voice” and participate in democratic practices. From school councils to sports teams – he advocated for getting involved in decision-making processes.

Our students were then able to ask him questions, from how he came to be an MP, what he’s doing to protect green spaces in Reading, through to why the choice was made to add VAT onto private school fees.

Matt shared that he believes that climate change and housing costs are two of the biggest issues facing our students.

It was inspiring to watch our pupils engaging with him in such a thoughtful manner, with a brilliant range of questions.

After chatting further with some students, Matt concluded his visit in Dr Tullis’s office. Joining him over a cup of tea were our Chair of Governors Liz Harrison, Head of Finance and Resources Nadine Doble and others members of the Senior Leadership Team.

It was a wonderful chance to celebrate our students, as well as talk about ways in which we can support one another further to benefit our community – both here at the Abbey and the wider Reading community.

We were delighted to welcome our local MP and share more about what The Abbey stands for, as well as introduce Matt to the wonderful people who make it what it is.
