In March, we will be offering students the opportunity to participate in a Readathon, a sponsored read to raise money for books for children in hospital. I hope that as many of you as possible will take part.

Recently, the historical fiction author, Phillippa Gregory, contacted The Abbey on behalf of the charity, Read for Good, to promote the Readathon. You may have read some of Phillipa’s books. One of which, Normal Women, was presented to last year’s Year 13 as their speech day prize and is available to borrow from the library. The Readathon will coincide with International Women’s Day as a way of highlighting women and their achievements – also the subject of Phillipa’s book.

You are probably wondering what exactly the money raised by the Readathon will be spent on? It will provide a mobile bookcase and team of storytellers to visit children in UK hospitals, who can read the books themselves or have them read to them.

The reading shouldn’t interrupt your school day: you can read during break and lunch times, on the journey to and from school, when you are at home – any time that you are free to read; it’s entirely up to you when and where you do it. Anything you read counts – fiction and non-fiction including magazines, comics and blogs, even song lyrics and recipes!

Next week, students will be given a sponsored card during registration, and these can also be picked up from the library. If you have any further questions, please contact me in the library. It may also be worth telling you that Rosas will be given for the books you read; if you drop the card off to the library after you have completed the Readathon, so we can see which House reads the most!
