Recently, the historical fiction author, Phillippa Gregory, contacted The Abbey on behalf of the charity, Read for Good, to promote the Readathon. You may have read some of Phillippa’s books. One of her books, Normal Women, was presented to last year’s Year 13 as their speech day prize and is available to borrow from the school library. The Readathon, a sponsored read in March, coincides with International Women’s Day as a way of highlighting women and their achievements – which is also the subject of Phillippa’s book.
The proceeds of the Readathon will provide special mobile bookcases and a team of storytellers. These amazing people then visit children in hospital, and either let them read the books themselves, or have them read to them.
The reading shouldn’t interrupt your school day: you can read during break and lunch times, on the journey to and from school, when you are at home – any time that you are free to read; it’s entirely up to you when and where you do it. Anything you read counts – fiction and non-fiction including magazines, comics and blogs, even song lyrics and recipes!
Happy Reading!
