What is Pi day?

World Pi Day is celebrated on 14th March (3/14) every year and celebrates all things Pi (and Pie!). Although I would argue that it is also worth celebrating it’s second birthday on 22nd July (22/7) as Pi is often approximated by that fraction. There isn’t a date that can be easily written as the cubed root of 31 though!
Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to it’s diameter. Archimedes approximated Pi very well; drawings in the sand approx. 250BC, and there are plenty of videos and websites dedicated to explaining how he did it.
You can’t celebrate Pi day without a good Pie!:

This week, students have been asked to make Pi themed meals; perhaps a pancake, pie or pizza, decorated with the symbol Pi. Our own Mr Roper carefully crafted a Pi pie for us (Apple and Cinnamon – yum).
