Physics club making coffee cups

on

Our first experiment was making water rockets. However, we have moved on from rockets, and we made coffee cups, this was an experiment to see the best way possible to keep the coffee warm but also making it a nice drink.

The first week, we got all the materials for the experiment. Our materials were: foil, paper, tape, cotton wool, plastic cups and cardboard. We used these since they are all good insulators, stopping heat being lost from the cups. We had lids to stop the heat escaping upwards by convection. We then tested the cups by putting the same volume of water in each group’s cup, and we also measured the starting temperature and the ending temperature and started the stopwatch at the same time to make it all a fair test.

At the end of the experiment two of the cups lost the least heat so it was a tie. Both cups had good heat and design.

Next week we are going to make crash helmets for eggs. So look out for our next post about physics club and see how our experiment turns out.
