Our ESU Public Speaking team travelled to Cokethorpe School (many thanks to Mrs Riches for driving us through wind and rain!) to compete in the second round of the ESU competition. Pitted against two teams from Bradfield College, and teams from Oxford High School, Radley College and Cokethorpe, The Abbey team won through to the Regional Final in March along with Radley College. In the words of the students:
“The second round of the ESU competition was truly a delight to be a part of! It was a particularly tough competition, with an extremely articulate and well-prepared cohort of competitors, who were also incredibly friendly and interesting to listen to. I’m sure all three of us also had great appreciation for the plethora of refreshments, and I think it’s fair to say that throughout the evening, not only were we never bored, but we also embodied confidence, purpose and joy.” Nikita, Lower V

“As ESU is my first experience of external speaking competitions, I had no idea what to expect going into the (frankly quite intimidating) room. I was relieved to find a friendly atmosphere, which did not detract from the tough competition! It was really enjoyable to talk with – and question – all the other excellent teams. Altogether it was a privilege to be a part of – and of course very exciting to go through!” Matilda, Lower V
“This round of ESU felt like a real triumph for us and was an unforgettable evening with Nikita, Matilda and Ms Quant! From being paired with a brilliant speaker from another school, to finally remembering to start the timer and even mixing up Elizabeth Bennet with Elizabeth Gilbert, the night was full of laughter and victory!” Ellanya, Lower V
“So, as the judges declared The Abbey School victorious, Nikita resembled The Scream painting, Ellanya dropped her flapjack and Matilda laid her questions to rest.” The team
We are all looking forward to competing again in March, when Dr Cuthbertson will be able to join us – this is the first time since Covid that we have reached the Regional Final.
