Making Pasties

on

Last week we made pasties. Our aim was to reduce food wastage so we had to try and reduce the amount of miles that we used to buy ingredients. For example, instead of buying onions and cheese from supermarkets we tried to get them from local farmers market.

We had to choose from three different fillings:

– Cheese and onion

– Cornish style: mince meat, onion, potato, carrot and a beef stock cube

– Cheese and potato

I chose the Cornish-styled filling. I had some leftover fillings from the last time I made them at home, so I used them at school. First, we mixed the margarine and plain flour until they had a crumbly texture and added some cold water. We continued and mixed it with our hands until it wasn’t too sticky or crumbly. We then placed some baking paper onto a pan and rolled out the dough.

We used a cutter to make it a circular shape and added our desired fillings. We folded it over and either made it into a dumpling shape or flattened it on the pan. We used a fork to crimp the edges and seal them tight. Finally, we used egg wash to cover it to give it a golden colour when cooked. We cooked it at 200C for 20-25 minutes.

We took it out of the oven and tried our pastries and I really enjoyed them.

It was a fantastic experience and I will make them again at home!
