There is a particular kind of magic that happens when young children discover the joy of reading — and at the Abbey, that magic is woven into everyday life. Our Early Reading journey is thriving, rooted in the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, which gives a strong, structured foundation in both decoding and comprehension. Daily sound and storybook lessons build confidence step by step, and the children take home a carefully chosen mix of books each week, including the Read Write Inc. text they have been practising in class. Because the story is familiar, they delight in sharing it with their families, using their developing “Storyteller Voices” to bring characters and ideas to life. This love for storytelling is further sparked by our class chapter books; in Lower Prep, the children are currently enchanted by the cosmic adventures of Adventure Mice: Mice on the Moon by Reeve and McIntyre, while Upper Prep are diving into the mysteries of The Thames Tide Club: The Secret City.

Fridays have become a highlight of the week: Prep Library Day. The children spend time browsing, “book tasting,” and discovering what captures their imagination. Our newly created library space on the Prep corridor has quickly become a cherished corner of school life. With its inviting rugs and thoughtfully curated selection — from picture books and early chapter books to non‑fiction, poetry, and independent readers — it offers something for every child.

What is most joyful is watching the children make the space their own. Some curl up quietly and lose themselves in pictures and words; others lie side by side, chatting, laughing, and sharing discoveries with friends. It is a place where reading feels natural, social, and deeply enjoyable.
Early Reading at the Abbey is flourishing. More importantly, the children are flourishing — growing not only as readers, but as curious, confident young learners who understand that books open doors to every kind of possibility.
