The annual Business Ethics Fair, organised by Ethical Reading took place at Leighton Park School last week. Twelve Lower VI Abbey students engaged with representatives from businesses and delegates from other schools in Reading to discuss key ethical issues. As a business student, this was an eye opening event as we saw how different sectors interwoven into our daily lives (e.g. Thames Valley Police, KPMG and Blandy and Blandy) balanced the motto “people, profit and planet” in their services. For example, in an in-depth session with Natwest, we explored the ethical concerns of handing out loans to young students who may not have the proper financial education; we also explored how banks dealt with ethical issues concerning funding businesses who pay workers a low amount. We also had the opportunity to have insightful Q&A with the speakers, where any question we asked was answered in depth, which allowed us to stretch our thinking further. All this made the experience beneficial to our Psychology, Philosophy and Theology, and Business Studies students.
