Last Friday was Languages day, which is always a special and joyful opportunity for students and teachers to showcase and celebrate the linguistic diversity of The Abbey community. This year, the theme of the event was ‘Languages open hearts and minds’, which led us to reflect on the invaluable benefits of learning foreign languages. In Junior and Senior assemblies, our wonderful MFL Prefects, Zara, Isabella and Rashi spoke eloquently about their own language journeys and how languages enable us to build new relationships and achieve global connectivity and cultural understanding. On that day, there was an array of visual reminders of this powerful message as students and teachers wore the heart shaped badges which they had decorated to show their national identity, languages they can speak or words to describe their language learning. There were a number of exciting language activities on offer at lunchtime and students have been given the opportunity to take part in national competitions to design a poster or write an article on this year’s theme.
