The Abbey Junior School is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Eco Schools Award with Distinction. This significant recognition places the school among an elite group of over 1000 schools across the country that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to environmental education and sustainable practices.
The Eco Schools programme, an national initiative that encourages schools to engage in child-led environmental projects, has acknowledged The Abbey Junior School for its outstanding efforts. The distinction highlights the school’s excellence in fostering environmental awareness and action through both curriculum integration and student-driven schemes.
“This project has enabled children to take action on real environmental issues and to make a difference in their school community and beyond. In our school, we grow global citizens with an environmental conscience.” – Miss Elaine Lisborg, Eco Coordinator, The Abbey Junior School.
Over the past year, students at The Abbey Junior School have spearheaded numerous projects aimed at reducing the school’s carbon footprint, promoting biodiversity, and encouraging sustainable living practices within the community. These initiatives include:
- Waste Reduction: Students organised and participated in preloved clothing sales, composting activities, food waste, recycling and battery recycling campaigns.
- Energy Saving: Through energy audits and awareness programs, students have worked to reduce energy consumption throughout the school.
- Biodiversity: The creation of a school garden and wildlife habitats have encouraged local biodiversity, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students about the importance of ecosystems.
“I am delighted for The Abbey Junior School to be receiving the Eco Schools Award with Distinction – demonstrating a testament to the commitment and creativity of our students and staff. Their passion for making a positive impact on our environment is truly inspiring and this award reflects the collective efforts of our entire school community. It celebrates our aim to promote meaningful global citizenship and a shared desire to make a positive difference to our world.” – Miss Nisha Kaura, Head, The Abbey Junior School.
The Eco Schools Award with Distinction not only acknowledges the impressive accomplishments of The Abbey Junior School but also serves as a motivation for continued environmental stewardship. The school remains dedicated to maintaining and expanding its green initiatives, aiming to inspire other schools in the region to pursue similar goals.
The Abbey Junior School looks forward to celebrating this achievement with a special assembly and a series of events planned to further educate and engage the community on environmental issues.
