Futures Week for Lower V

on

This week Lower V students enjoyed Futures Week – which including delving into the world of current affairs and global issues as well as a visit to MERL.

The week kicked off with ‘Discovering the World,’ an IB-inspired exploration of contemporary topics. In the morning, Lower V students collaborated in groups within their house venues, analysing a range of content to gain insights into different facets of the global drug trade. They shared their findings and engaged in reflective discussions.

In the afternoon, students were tasked with designing websites to reflect their research and perspectives gained from earlier in the day. Some showcased remarkable creativity by recording videos and podcasts to present their findings.

At the end of the day, students proudly presented their websites to their peers within their houses. Many earned ROSAs for their outstanding effort, creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and focus.

Here are some wonderful presentations

Later in the week, Lower V were involved in a bit of dating at school – career speed dating to be precise! It was a great way to get our students to ask questions about different careers from our guests!

Twelve students also visited the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) for volunteer archiving. MERL focuses on agriculture and rural developments but also holds archives from companies like WH Smith, Ladybird publishers, and Huntley and Palmers.

We began with a tour of the buildings and library, where the main archives are kept in a highly controlled cool and dry environment to prevent paper degradation. The museum’s café and gardens were delightful additions to the MERL, and as it is close to the Abbey, only a short walk from the tennis courts, I would encourage students to explore this space.

Our task involved re-packaging design projects, allowing us to handle creative posters, booklets, letter designs, and magazines. The nature of the art sparked thought-provoking discussions, and the careful preservation work created a refreshing and collaborative atmosphere that was enjoyed by everyone.
