On Sunday 22 June, 8 students went to the Lee Valley Hockey Centre to watch the international fixtures involving England. The Women faced Spain, whilst the Men faced Australia, but before both games the students were involved in the team introductions. They caried the large FIH flag onto the pitch before the teams were introduced and were on the pitch whilst the national anthems were played.
Both games were fantastic. First up were the women, who were ahead after three minutes, but Spain equalised at a penalty corner towards the end of the first quarter. It looked like Spain would go ahead, when they were awarded a penalty stroke at the start of the second quarter, but the shot was saved so it was still 1-1 at half time. England took control of the game in the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter, firstly at a penalty corner. England scored again in the final quarter when Spain, chasing the game, withdrew their goalkeeper.

The Men’s game was just as exciting. After a goalless first half where both teams had chances, but the goalkeepers were in fine form (including a penalty stroke miss by Australia). England took the lead at a short corner at the start of the third quarter, but Australia equalised to make it 1-1 going into the final quarter. England took the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for the win, despite England having a player suspended.

In addition to the games and flag carrying, the students had an opportunity to try the activities in the ‘fun zone’ and collect autographs and selfies with the players. Both they and Mrs Mair had a fantastic time!
