DIY skills – one shelf at a time

on

It is a long established gender trait that the man about the house should do the DIY. As a child, I took many trips to B&Q with my Dad to pick up wood or paint, and now I have a nice collection of different sized wood (and different paints) in my shed, along with a variety of saws, drills and other assorted tools. Whenever I do any DIY at home, which is most weekends, I instruct my sons to hold ‘this’ or hammer ‘that’, so that they may learn this manly trait.

Should we leave these jobs to the men? Absolutely not! Thanks hugely to the estates team for their support throughout the year; providing a work space, tools and even a makeshift unit to put up a shelf, the DIY skills sessions have become more and more popular through the year. What started with ‘Drill and hole, fill and hole’ has now culminated with ‘put up a shelf’. With many of our sixth form hoping to finally fly the nest, they may need to know how to handle a drill. Here are a few action shots, and if you missed out and want to learn, there will be one more session in the summer term.
