Classics Competitions 2025 – Spring and Summer term
The Classics Department would like to encourage all students to take part in one (or more!) of the following Classics Competitions!
Explore the world of mythology, creativity, and ancient languages!
Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): The Wooden Horse
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): Romulus and Remus
Submit a piece of Creative Writing, Art, or Animation.
📅 Deadline: Friday, 9 May 2025
Create an artistic response to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in one of these categories:
Performance, Artefact, Animation, Creative Writing, Comic Strip/Cartoon.
Eligibility: Upper III only
📅 Deadline: 9 am, 27 January 2025
Myths and Legends: A Classics Competition 2025
Choose one of the three competition categories, pick a myth or legend from that category’s shortlist and prepare a written entry
Eligibility: Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)
📅 Deadline: Thursday, 27 February 2025
Bring Latin to life by recording yourself reading stories or poetry.
Categories: Junior, Intermediate, Senior
📅 Deadline: Friday, 14 March 2025
Ancient Worlds Competition 2025
Produce and deliver a presentation in 15 minutes or less in response to “Which ancient myth fascinates you the most and why?”
Eligibility: Anyone aged 11-18, United Kingdom.
📅 Deadline: Tuesday, 11 March 2025
Write, speak, or design your response in one of these formats:
A written manifesto (500–2000 words)
A poster (up to 500 words with images)
A video (maximum 15 minutes)
Age Groups: Junior (12 and under), Intermediate (13–18), Senior (19–24)
📅 Deadline: Friday, 31 January 2025
Submissions can take the form of a written (up to 500 words) or creative (drawing, poster, photo of a diorama or scene) response to the question “why did Roman tokens carry numerals?”.
Two entry categories: KS3 (ages 11-14) and GCSE – A-level (ages 14-18)
📅 Deadline: Saturday, 1 February 2025
The Bernice L. Fox Classics Writing Contest 2025
Write a short story, essay, play, poem, or original literary work of any other sort on the topic: One or More Figures from Classical History, Literature, or Mythology as the Next President of the United States, or Running for the Office.
Eligibility: Anyone enrolled in high school, worldwide.
📅 Deadline: Saturday, 15 March 2025
St John’s College Classics and Ancient History Essay Competition 2025
Submit one essay of up to 2,000 words on any of the following four questions:
1 Classical Literature: ‘Does ancient literature equate might with right?’
2 Ancient History: ‘Why did monarchies succeed in Greek and/or Roman history?’
3 Ancient Philosophy: ‘Was Plato right that the best rulers are reluctant ones?’
4 Archaeology: ‘How important was the visual representation of women for expressing royal and/or imperial power in the ancient world?’
Eligibility: Lower VI

Fitzwilliam Essay Competition 2025
Write an essay on captivating questions for a competition in Ancient World and Classics or Archaeology
Eligibility: Lower VI

The Minds Underground Classics Essay Competition 2025
Write an essay on captivating questions such as:
- What can ancient societies teach us about contemporary political systems?
- How does the portrayal of myth in ancient literature influence modern storytelling?
- Is it fair to judge ancient societies by modern ethical standards?
Eligibility: Lower VI
