It has been a busy term in the senior school library – not least in the hundreds of book loans, library lessons and students who visit every afternoon to attend Homework Club. There have also been competitions such as Non-Fiction November, in which students had to write a review of their favourite non-fiction book, and the letter to Santa competition, where both staff and students could request a longed-for book! The homework club has also been a hive of activity, icing Christmas cookies, decorating our tree and managing to complete a 1,000 words jigsaw of a festive winter scene.
The library staff would like to thank everybody in the Abbey community for continuing to foster the ethos and love of reading in the school and to wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
As Christmas is the season of gifts; and what better gift than the joy of reading? I would like share you some recommendations for christmas-themed books to read over this holiday season:
The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus by Dr
Hannah Fry & Dr Thomas Oléron Evans
This book is a fascinating read that proves that maths is not
only interesting, but can be fun as well! With chapters
explaining maths-based answers to questions from ‘how do
you decorate the tree?’ to the age-old ‘can Santa exist?’,
this is a great way to explore outside the curriculum whilst
providing a compelling and hilarious read.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
I’m sure you’ll have all heard of this classic novel, but it’s a classic
for a reason. The story tells of a miserly old man called
Ebeneezer Scrooge who is visited by four ghosts in order to
change his heartless ways. Filled with magic, mystery, and a
strong moral message, the ending is sure to bring a smile to your face.
Christmas Traditions, Celebrations and Food Across Europe by Stella
Ross Collins
If you’re looking to expand your horizons this Christmas, then this book is a
wonderful way to do it. Jam-packed with Christmas spirit from around the continent,
this book is sure to give you knowledge about how other people’s Christmases vary
from your own.
The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder
From the bestselling author of Sophie’s World comes a tale that
draws on the religious, historical and philosophical origins of
Christmas to weave together a complex and engaging story.
Written in twenty-five chapters, the book can function as a literary
advent calendar, as it did during my own childhood.
