Celebrating World Languages Day

on

This year again, World Languages Day was a resounding success as students and teachers enjoyed celebrating their linguistic diversity and showcasing their own cultural heritage. It was a real pleasure to see such a wonderful array of traditional dress, national sporting shirts or flags from around the world. Students enjoyed participating in fun events at lunchtime: a quiz on Chinese food, karaoke in Spanish and German and a French café experience. Students of all ages were also invited to take part in a competition organised by the Council of Europe to design a poster to illustrate the theme of ‘Languages for Peace’.
What a memorable day!

Last Friday, a few Sixth Form language students and I had the opportunity to give an assembly celebrating International Languages Day. We spoke about languages’ vital role in today’s interconnected world and how learning them can broaden horizons by opening doors to new cultures, careers, and personal connections.

As an A Level Spanish student, I shared how growing up in a multilingual household has given me a unique perspective on communication and how studying Spanish has deepened my appreciation for the cultural diversity behind each language. During the assembly, we also emphasised how speaking multiple languages can significantly enhance career prospects, especially in fields such as international business, engineering, and diplomacy, where understanding different languages and cultures is key.

By learning languages, students can position themselves for opportunities in global industries like Formula 1, tourism, and technology, where effective communication can make a huge difference.

For the European Day of Languages, the French department organised a special café experience where students could sample traditional treats such as croissants and madeleines. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy French culture through its cuisine, while also learning more about the country’s culinary heritage. The event was a fun and delicious way to bring language learning to life!
