In After School Care, the children have been celebrating Black History Month through the medium of art. The girls learnt about the famous artist Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was an African-American painter during the 20th Century (1891-1978) and became the first African American woman to be included in the White House’s permanent art collection.

The girls enjoyed looking at examples of her work, which have been likened to mosaics. They then worked on creating their own pieces of artwork, inspired by Alma Thomas’ style. Lots of thought and creativity went in to their designs and they really enjoyed trying a new style of painting. Lots of bright colours were used as well as a variety of tools, varying from paint brushes, sponge ‘brushes’ and even cotton buds. The children enjoyed seeing how the different tools made different marks and shapes of varying sizes and used this to create beautiful pieces of art.
